Keeping evaporative systems running

Evaporative coolers are common across Perth roofs and are generally reliable, but they do need seasonal attention. Pumps wear out, pads clog with mineral deposits and dust, and motors and belts age like any mechanical component sitting on a roof in the sun. A bit of maintenance before summer keeps the system running efficiently and avoids a breakdown on the first forty degree day.

• It has not been serviced or checked in over a year

Evaporative vs refrigerative

Evaporative cooling works by drawing hot dry air through water soaked pads, which is efficient to run and works well in Perth's dry summer heat, but performance drops on humid days and it only cools, it cannot heat. Refrigerative systems, whether split or ducted, cool and heat effectively regardless of humidity, run in a sealed system, and generally cost more to run per hour but perform consistently year round. Plenty of Perth homes run both, using evaporative for general summer cooling and a split system for the room that needs more precise control.
